COUNSELLING BASED IN WOKINGHAM

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need counselling?

If you are struggling to cope and are finding day-to-day life difficult, or if you are looking to invest in your personal awareness, talking to someone confidentially, who is not a friend or family member, can make all the difference. Counselling provides a protected space for you to discuss any issues you're facing and explore your feelings. Within the therapeutic relationship, you'll discover a trusted environment where you are respected, valued, and supported. This commitment to yourself not only allows you to gain insight and find clarity but also helps you to live a more fulfilling life, whether you're navigating challenges or seeking deeper self-understanding.

What is the BACP?

The BACP stands for The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The BACP is one of the largest professional membership organisations for counsellors and therapists in the UK, providing an ethical framework for good practice for counsellors and therapists, and information and guidance for people who access therapy. I abide by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice, which can be found here: http://www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework

What is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy is an approach that recognises the impact of trauma on an individual's life and seeks to provide care that is sensitive to these experiences. This type of therapy prioritises creating a safe, trusting environment where clients feel empowered to address and heal from their trauma. It integrates knowledge about trauma into all aspects of treatment to support recovery and resilience.

Where are you based?

I am a counsellor based in Wokingham, providing face to face and online sessions for clients in the surrounding areas of Berkshire, Reading, Bracknell, Windsor, Ascot and across the UK.

Am I able to see you face to face?

Yes, I can see you in person at either The Wokingham Therapy Clinic or The Grange, Rodger Duckworth's physiotherapy clinic. The day of your appointment will determine which clinic I am working from. Please use the booking link to get in touch, and I will share my availability at our first consultation.

Is online therapy also a good option?

Online therapy offers a viable and effective alternative to traditional face-to-face sessions for mental health support. Its convenience and flexibility are significant benefits, eliminating the need for travel, which is especially useful if you find leaving your home challenging due to mental health concerns, mobility issues, or living in a remote location. The ability to schedule appointments that fit around your personal and professional commitments ensures that therapy accommodates your lifestyle. Many clients appreciate the comfort of engaging in therapy from a familiar environment, enhancing the therapeutic experience. Additionally, online therapy provides privacy, sparing you from the potential discomfort of encountering others when you might feel most vulnerable. However, it's important to acknowledge that online therapy isn't suited to everyone. I encourage you to consider carefully whether this mode of therapy aligns with your needs and preferences, as there are other counsellors who are able to work face to face should you find that more beneficial.

What can I expect from the first session?

In our first session, we'll review the counselling agreement to establish a safe and supportive space for our work together. I'll lead an initial assessment to gently begin understanding you and what has brought you to therapy. It’s important for you to have the space to ask any questions you might have about how I work. This step is essential for you to make an informed choice about whether you feel comfortable proceeding with me as your counsellor.

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions you need will vary depending on you, the difficulties you would like to work on and your goals for therapy. I am happy to discuss the likely length of time or number of sessions with you in the first session, and work out a plan together.

What if I can’t commit to weekly sessions?

It is most therapeutic to have weekly sessions. I am happy to try to accommodate flexible times to fit in with shifts or irregular working patterns, subject to availability. Sometimes, with longer term therapy, session frequency can be negotiated to meet the client's needs.

How do I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment by either calling 07810 531372 (please feel free to leave a voicemail) or completing the online booking form.
